At HIFF: Matthew Broderick and Alec Baldwin Consider Brando, Hughes, Career Misfires plus much more
Don’t permit the audience hijinks fool you: A couple of days ago’s chat between Matthew Broderick and Alec Baldwin within the Hamptons Film Festival gave the two old acting chums almost an entire hour capture up — frequently hilariously so, with Saturday’s ostensible tribute to Broderick generally creating a freewheeling gab session involving the males. Baldwin, a longtime HIFF supporter, introduced Broderick getting a short appreciation designated by a bit of chop-busting, which set a bad tone for your event generally. “In the earth we’re in now,” he mentioned, “there’s several things that’s funny, nevertheless it’s less than the best material. Everything seems being kind of dumbed-lower. And here’s somebody who’s made his status when you're very funny and clever and smart concurrently, and never choosing for any budget laugh. Well, I shouldn’t say, ‘Never.’ In the event you comb through all his films you'll most likely look for a couple of good good examples. But never lunging for your cheap laugh or whatever.” Many of the first discussion was essentially dedicated to Broderick’s early on career — landing his first role in the follow Horton Foote (the Southern author and playwright who was simply a pal of Broderick’s actor father James), then penetrating in Harvey Fierstein’s watershed Torch Song Trilogy. Asked for by Baldwin why he preferred to actin the to start with, Broderick responded, “That I don’t know. I guess When i first seen it and thought it may be quick money.” “It is, really,” Baldwin mentioned. Their repartee ongoing using the discussion of Broderick’s early film work — Max Dugan Returns, Wargames and Ladyhawke particularly. “I remember seeing Michelle Pfeiffer leaning out her window,” Broderick mentioned in the latter’s production in Rome. “I think getting a cigarette. She’s extended since quit that. She am incredibly gorgeous in this Italian light, which i had been like, ‘I have handled to obtain.’” “In the beginning,” Baldwin mentioned, “for me, which i wonder if it had been the identical to suit your needs—” “This is a lot more about me, though,” Broderick interrupted, compelling laughs within the crowd. Most inside the audience were clearly waiting for Baldwin to grill Broderick about Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and author-director John Hughes, with whom Baldwin also done She’s Getting a baby. Baldwin broached the subject undertaking a short aside about Martha Marcy May Marlene, the festival darling opening a couple of days ago and acclaimed by Baldwin for your director-actor partnership between Sean Durkin and breakout star Elizabeth Olsen. Broderick hadn’t yet learned about Martha, but he could immediately trace the same phenomenon to Hughes. Here’s video of Broderick and Baldwin’s exchange, then a few text excerpts in the exchange: “That’s among somebody who’s so up-to-date for your performance,” Broderick mentioned in the 1986 classic. “It’s essential. He understood items to use with me at night because part. He understood methods for getting it of me and the way to edit it. He was hilariously funny and quiet. And frequently they're very quiet. And you also’d think, ‘Is John mad at me?’ Those would say, ‘I don’t think so.’ And A Pair Of days later, he'd, ‘I know you think that we was mad about something, however’m no longer.’ But ultimately he was super easy to make use of. He was most likely probably the most easy person will be able to use with the finish of the. Much less it wasn’t somewhat difficult getting there. With the finish, I’d come with an idea, which i wouldn’t even finish explaining the idea.” Meanwhile, Baldwin mentioned, Hughes attempted signal cards round the cast of She’s Getting a baby. “I was undertaking a scene where I used to be speaking — I used to be with my girlfriend,” he referred to. “And i had been stated to become horrifying Kevin Sausage and Elizabeth McGovern with this particular debauched lifestyle. And he or she would let me know, ‘Where [have] everybody gone recently?’ and John would write notes on signal cards since the cameras were moving.” “Oh, God!” Broderick jeered. “So, ‘What urban centers are you currently presently to?’ or, ‘Which ones do you want?’” Baldwin ongoing. “And John would write, ‘Berlin… Lesbians…’ ‘Well, you understand, Berlin’s so full of lesbians.’ He’d endure helping you to notice. John’s the only real individual who did that. It absolutely was amazing.” “He would write whenever you were shooting constantly,” Broderick mentioned. “It ultimately will be a wonderful experience.”

Boss
Credits: Filmed in Chicago by Grammnet Prods., Roya Prods. and Old Friend Prods. in association with Lionsgate. Executive producers, Kelsey Grammer, Farhad Safinia, Gus Van Sant, Stella Bulochnikov, Brian Sher, Lyn Greene, Richard Levine; co-executive producer, Bradford Winters; producer, Peter Giuliano; director, Van Sant; writer, Safinia. With: Kelsey Grammer, Connie Nielsen, Hannah Ware, Jeff Hephner, Kathlean Robertson, Martin Donovan, Troy Garity, Darius Morrison, Francis Guinan, Karen Aldridge.Politicians are held in such low regard that building a drama around City Hall shenanigans -- especially in Chicago -- feels like an uphill campaign. Taking a detour from Starz's recent blood-and-sci-fi leanings, "Boss" certainly creates a showy role for star/producer Kelsey Grammer as a ruthless Windy City mayor diagnosed with a debilitating disease, adding a "Breaking Bad," nothing-to-lose quality to his serialized story. Still, the show labors under the weight of familiar political-movie cliches, offsetting its polished look -- and Gus Van Sant's unorthodox direction of the pilot -- with a been-there, seen-that feel. Using intense close-ups, Van Sant, working from Farhad Safinia's script, zooms in tight on Grammer's Mayor Tom Kane as he receives the grim news, giving him three to five years, ballpark, before he's incapacitated by an incurable condition. Frankly, it would help if we knew a bit more about Kane before the diagnosis, other than the fact he's a Daley-like power-broker and accomplished philanderer, living in a marriage of political convenience with his stately wife ("Gladiator's" Connie Nielsen), and estranged from his grown daughter (Hannah Ware). Instead, we get to know him as he orchestrates a gubernatorial run by an ambitious young pol (Jeff Hephner) against the seasoned incumbent (Francis Guinan), for reasons that -- four episodes in -- remain murky. What sort of legacy, exactly, is Kane hoping to secure? In the interim, there's a lot of the requisite pay-cable doings, from sex and nudity to drug use and, yes, some mob-like violence. Grammer's Kane, for instance, faced with the threat of a sanitation-pickup stoppage, gets to snap off lines like, "Let the streets run with shit." It's all played solidly enough, though so many elements seem plucked from other fare -- including the investigative reporter (Troy Garity) on Kane's trail -- the show struggles to distinguish itself. And frankly, presenting a journalist in what appears to be a semi-heroic mode, even in support, feels oh-so-1970s. Although one hates to dissuade Starz from heading down this stately path after it looked as if every program might have "Spartacus" in the title, the bottom line is that "The Wire," "The West Wing" and even "Boardwalk Empire" have set the bar for this sort of material quite high. Moreover, there's almost no humor in the previewed episodes to balance the sense of a show taking itself a bit too seriously -- or to reflect the absurdity of indicted Illinois real-life pols, including ex-Gov. Rod Blagojevich. Grammer needn't prove his considerable chops run a lot deeper than "Frasier," and while he's easily the biggest name in the cast, it's generally a firstrate ensemble. Starz made some news by agreeing to a second season prior to the premiere, which is sort of like picking out office decor before the voters have had their say. Like Chicago politics, though, prestige drama is a rough-and-tumble world. If Starz truly wants to compete in the toga-free game over the long run, it's going to need candidates with slightly stronger appeal than "Boss."Camera, Kasper Tuxen; production designer, Daniel B. Anatoly Sergievsky - Tam Mutu
Svetlana Sergievsky - Rebecca Lock
The Arbiter - David Erik
Walter De Courcey - James Graeme
Alexander Molokov - Steve VarnomSince it was released as a concept album in 1984, "Chess" by Tim Rice, Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus has been through more reincarnations than Shirley MacLaine. The latest, getting a run in Toronto prior to a stop on the West End, is helmed by Craig Revel Horwood with a lot of panache, a healthy dose of over-the-top theatricality and a steady stream of actor-musicians driving the engine. He succeeds in making the show two things it has never really been before: semi-coherent and consistently entertaining. In all of its versions, a temperamental American chess champ (Trumper) plays against an idealistic Russian (Sergievsky). The cities they play in, who wins and loses and why it all happens has changed in every draft. The current version starts in Merano, Italy, in 1979 and ends in Bangkok a year later. Along the way, there's a convoluted system of political intrigues, some dating as far back as the Hungarian revolution in 1956, and a fair bit of talk about media manipulation. But what has always sold the story and sells it here is the central saga of a married man (Sergievsky) who gives up his family and country for the mistress (Vassy) of his opponent (Trumper). Shona White, who plays the mistress role, has a wonderful ability to fling herself into emotional ballads. When the big numbers like "Heaven Help My Heart," "Anthem," "Pity the Child" and "I Know Him So Well" come, Horwood is clever enough to keep the stage still and let the powerhouse performers nail the tunes. But during the attenuated sequences of recitative and narration he pulls out all the stops, with chess pieces seemingly dressed by Victoria's Secret and choreography that reveals how you can bump and grind while playing a violin. Depending on your frame of mind, you'll call it superbly theatrical or slightly cheesy. It definitely does play to the British "more is more" school of musical staging. (Production has already had a successful tour of the U.K.) There's much to enjoy in Horwood's over-decoration of the show, which takes its baroque concepts right into rococo. The hit tune "One Night in Bangkok" pulls out all the stops -- if you've never seen a pole-dancing, trumpet-playing monk before, you will here. But when all is said and done, it's the emotional solidity of the four leads (White, Tam Mutu, James Fox and Rebecca Lock) that make you feel by the end of the second act that you've had a satisfying evening. Mutu in particular is a real winner, with a clarion call of a voice, the right kind of rumpled good looks and the intensity that could lead revolutions. As for the rest, Horwood's production is a fun place to visit, but you wouldn't want to live there.Set and costumes, Christopher woods; lighting, Ben Cracknell; video, Jack James; sound, Richard Brooke..
